South Yorkshire Fire & Rescue, South Yorkshire Police and Yorkshire Ambulance Service joined forces to create the LIFE team to attend lower priority incidents in Sheffield, with the aim of reducing the demand on 999 responders. The Local Intervention and Falls Episodes (LIFE) team vist homes to reduce fire risk in properties, improve security and help people who have fallen and contribute to reducing the risk of falls.

These scenes capture the final moments of a police vehicle as it is engulfed in flames on 26 August 2017. Two officers were on a blue light run on the A168 near Thirsk when the car suffered a catastrophic engine failure. Both officers left the vehicle and watched from a safe distance as the car went up in flames. There was nothing they could do to stop the fire. While the blue lights were still flashing, the fire spread and thick black smoke swept across the carriageway.  Fire crews from Thirsk and Ripon responded to the call and used two hose reel jets and four breathing apparatus to extinguish the fire. By then the vehicle was just a metal shell and was totally written off.

This preserved traffic car was based at Cosham and patrolled the motorways around Portsmouth in the late 1980s. The car has 185 bhp and a top speed of 140 mph. Notice the boot-mounted police spoiler housing the police and stop signs. A multi-use vehicle, it also carried a gun box for armed deployments.

This became the only vehicle used by the constabulary in 2017. It doesn’t carry any constabulary wording, just the City of London corporation crests. It replaces a P registration Vauxhall Astra estate dating from 1996.
