YJ10 OCF This silver Ford Focus is used by North Yorkshire police as a dog unit. Wording on the side shows the public that it is air conditioned. This means that the dogs can stay cool in the summer even if locked in the car. The engine can remain running to power the air con using the Runlock system. If any unauthorised person entered the car, the engine would stop if any of the pedals were depressed. It also has the nationally recognised triangle symbol on the roof

AE59 EPA This is a Northamptonshire Police Volvo XC70 with a 2.4-litre diesel engine. Notice the four blue flashing LEDs in the grille.

MX07 UWV Here is a Greater Manchester Police BMW 318D Touring. It is seen here tailing a security van carrying cash. Many such vans, including this one, carry a sign on the rear stating “Police Follow This Van”.

N610 SWK This is a Jaguar XJ6 that is now in preservation. It carries a 4-litre engine and was new in 1996. It is fitted with blue flashing lights behind the grille as well as the roof-mounted light bar.

LG59 LUO This BMW X5 Demonstrator is labelled as an Incident Investigation Unit. The rear side passenger windows have been brightly obscured to increase the visible presence of the car.

This unregistered Hummer H2 has been decked in Police markings and blue lights courtesy of VT Group, a supplier of engineering solutions of the emergency services.

This smart looking Volvo V70 is a police specification demonstrator straight from the Volvo Torslanda Factory in Sweden.

VX55 AVP This Toyota Land Cruiser is operated by West Mercia Constabulary.

NK57 AKJ This is a Durham BMW X3. It is fitted with a three-litre diesel engine and automatic gearbox.

NK51 DDJ A Durham Land Rover Defender makes its way over hilly ground with blue lights flashing.

NK09 FHY This Ford Transit is used by Durham Constabulary. It has a single strip of battenburg markings down each side and is fitted with a riot shield for the windscreen. It doesn’t have any blue light bar, but a number of small blue flashing LEDs around the bodywork.

NK59 AAE This is a Yamaha YZF R1 police motorbike which is with Durham Constabulary. The superbike with a 998cc engine is used to attract the public at events to discuss road safety, as well as being used to catch speeding motorists, assisted by a regular police motorbike.

This is a Suzuki Katana scooter in police colours. This small-engined bike carries Ride Well and Bike Wise advertising. It has had the wing mirrors removed and registration plate changed as it is used for stunts rather than regular police duties!

BX10 LBL This is a three-wheeled Piaggio MP3 motorbike belonging to the Metropolitan Police, London. It is fitted with blue flashing lights and is usually driven by PCSOs working for the Safer Transport Command. The blue light are only used when stationary to warn motorists of its presence by the side of the road or to protect a scene, as the riders aren’t response trained. It is one of dozens that were introduced from June 2010.

There are two derivatives in use by the Met, the 400LT and the 250IE. The larger engined model requires a category B1 driving licence and the smaller engined model only requires a restriced category A licence.



The bike merging back into traffic. You can see how narrow it is compared to cars. The bikes require minimal additional training to ride as they can be ridden without having a motorbike licence. They are also much more environmentally friendly than cars.

BX10 LHP is another of the Met’s Piaggio MP3s, a 250cc model.

BX10 LHE is a Met Police Piaggio MP3. It is parked up with its blue lights flashing as part of a temporary road closure. This is normally the only time you can see the blue lights (and red to rear) activated, as the PCSO riders are not response trained and are not permitted to use them when the vehicle is moving.

WN59 VNV This is a Mitsubishi Outlander that is a demonstrator on loan to Durham Constabulary in Summer 2010.

YJ59 NYZ is a Mitsubishi Outlander that is with North Yorkshire Police. It carries a single band of battenburg markings down each side, as well as Crimestoppers and non-emergency telephone number advertising.

CX59 FFP This silver Ford Focus is used by North Wales Police.

BX59 BWV This is a Met Police Hyundai I30 in silver that is being used to block off a road in central London.

JMN-205-B The Isle of Man Police operate this Range Rover for roads policing, based in Douglas.

JMN-694-J The Isle of Man also has this Ford Ranger pick-up which is used as a dog unit.

HMN-548-X This Isle of Man Ford Fiesta is used or general patrol duties. On the bonnet is written in Manx “meoiryn shee-ellan vannin” meaning the Isle of Man Constabulary.
